Spiraling

Organization or School Affiliation: New Bedford High School

Student Name: Kiva Bank
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This staircase references the depressive “spiral” one can have. A double helix structure of DNA provides a railing support, as genetic factors can increase the risk of someone having depressive episodes, particularly if there is family history of depression. The wall portraits represent behavioral influence of others who contribute to and nurture the descent into depressive darkness.

Organization or School Affiliation: Dennis Yarmouth Regional High

Student Name: Johnathan Hendricks
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: The zipper-head piece is a strong piece due to its meaning. The symbolism of the zipper is the man’s breaking point and the words on him are the feelings and emotions he is letting out. I created this piece during men’s mental health month. During the process it really inspired me to push my boundaries to make a sculpture that helps view the difficulties of mental health.

Student Name: Sophia Dupey

Artist Statement: When making this dinnerware set, I wanted to incorporate a lively design that was continuous throughout each piece. I chose poppies because they symbolize rebirth, and the set is meant to represent the promise of springtime after every long winter. The vines of the poppies connect throughout, and bring each piece of the set into one.

Farewell
Farewell

Organization or School Affiliation: Manchester Essex Reg SD

Student Name: August Capotosto
Grade: Grade 10
Artist Statement: I used collage and gouache in my combination of The Kiss by Gustav Klimt and The Tempest by Oskar Kokoschka. Both pieces depict lovers in an intimate embrace, one being passionate and the other dismal. I chose to use Klimt’s poses and utilize Kokoschka’s style for the male figure to portray decay, yet decorate him in the bright colors and patterns of Klimt, also inspired by Egyptian sarcophagi.

Anatomy of Our Modern People

Organization or School Affiliation: Manchester Essex Reg SD

Student Name: Miles Takayesu
Grade: Grade 9
Artist Statement: In my art piece i used the traditional art style of stippling to create a more masculine body in opposition to the modern style of cubism and the more feminine colors to represent the difference in the rigid gender norms we are forced to fit into vs the people we truly are, i further made this point by placing the subject in tea soaked paper to show the old fashioned ideals we still live in today.

The Next Step
The Next Step

Organization or School Affiliation: Manchester Essex Reg SD

Student Name: Henry Swerdloff
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: My piece was influenced by Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling. When I saw the older man holding his chin in his hand, contemplating life, I was inspired to draw a more modern form of contemplation. I thought about life choices people make. Later in life one may question those choices, and whether the path their life took was best suited for them, and their passions.

Organization or School Affiliation: Manchester Essex Reg SD

Student Name: Oliver Rodi
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: My piece, entitled Inside's, theme, is how we as people have two sides to ourselves. There’s the outside oriented side, representing our personalities and how they can be changed around other people. Then there’s the inner side, the gouache, that shows our internal thoughts + desires. My work was inspired by artists like Keith Haring, Michelangelo, design from Hirohiko Araki and modern design.

Artist Statement: My drawing is a nature piece done in graphite on paper. My focus was enhancing little things in nature that get overlooked but are pivotal factors in making a scene beautiful. Artist Statement: In this multifaceted self-portrait painting, I studied various angles of my physical self to reflect my subconscious thought process.
