Anxious Hands
Davis Publications Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Acton-Boxborough Regional High School

Student Name: Lilac Shi
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: The random and chaotic hand placement represents anxiety’s control on an individual. The density of the hands start to disperse at the edges because our anxious thoughts are not completely capable of controlling us; although in the moment we might think so.

MAEA BIPOC Student Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Billerica Memorial High School

Student Name: Herin Lee
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: With bold colors, unexpected marks, and rough textures, I expressed my desire to break free from mundane, restrained everyday life. I explored more expressive faces and experimented on a torn-up cardboard box with modeling paste and paint to create a very rugged background, complementing the expressions of strong emotions I often suppress.

Artist Statement: This set was created using saggar firing, and depicts two koi fish in their classic yin and yang positioning. The unique coloring came from a variety of different materials including banana peels, plant fertilizer, salt and sugar. This combined with ferric acid was then wrapped in aluminum foil to create the final product, with mixtures of reds, oranges, browns, and black.

Virginia M. Diani Adams Memorial Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Weston high school

Student Name: Magnus Starrett
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: Body insecurity affects many people. We tend to be very harsh critics of ourselves and we assume that others think the same kinds of things about us. Self improvement turns into a vicious, desperate and unfruitful cycle that takes you in and spits you out just the same as you were. It's important to appreciate yourself every step along the way and to give yourself credit when it’s due.

Blick Art Materials Gift Card Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Oliver Ames High School

Student Name: Isabel Domenico
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: “Foot Traffic” portrays a moment in a crowded school hallway, feet shuffling, stuck behind a slow walker; each shoe representing each unique individual. This piece portrays the fleeting nature of high school. For the composition, I utilized four mediums, colored pencil, oil pastel, pen, and watercolor, all joined together capturing the vibrances of the shoes against a bland school hallway.

Hat Sisters Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Oliver Ames High School

Student Name: Naomi Marcus
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: I have lived in a number of different cities & countries. Despite learning to find home wherever I am, I often feel as though I do not truly have a home-land. "Made in Canada, 1937" is a reflection of my desire to connect with my Canadian heritage, through creation. This colored pencil drawing of paint brushes in an antique jar is an exploration of myself: my love of art & my personal history.

Art for All Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Dennis Yarmouth Regional High

Student Name: Elizsabeth Turner
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: I combined my love for ceramics with my love for the ocean by creating a Humpback whale sculpture. I aimed to incorporate elements native to Cape Cod as I’ve grown up here around the beaches. I found driftwood from my local marsh for the base and carved the fins out of spare wood. Overall, this piece not only combines mediums but also my love for oceanic animals.

Organization or School Affiliation: Weston high school

Student Name: Rosa Whitmore
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: In my artwork, I portray a young Latino boy being ripped away from his father, desperately holding on for one last hug. The purpose of my painting is to highlight the intolerable pain when families are forced to separate. Reflecting on my art as a Guatemalan, I am so grateful for being welcomed into a safe community in the United States.

Organization or School Affiliation: Acton-Boxborough Regional High School

Student Name: Vaishnavi Murthy
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This piece, inspired by surrealist style, represents my personal effort to find some clarity in a period where my self-perception feels clouded. The hand represents that this seeking is a voluntary choice, revealing a nature that is serene and absolute. I used myself as a reference for this piece, experimenting with my mirror at home and layering oil on acrylic to utilize its blending quality.

Blick Art Supplies Gift Card
Organization or School Affiliation: Franklin High School

Student Name: Isabella Kabat
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: Override was created out of Raku clay. I sculpted the face and hand built the nose, lips, eyes, and cheekbones. I then applied a white crackle glaze to create a unique pattern with smoke. Finally, I broke apart the technical pieces of an old computer and glued parts of it onto the face. I did this to showcase how fast AI is transforming our lives; and possibly turning us into robots.

Organization or School Affiliation: Phillips academy Andover

Student Name: Heyon Choi
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: I attempt to change our view of the world by inserting a different timeframe into consciousness. Do we have the capacity to imagine beyond 100 years? Will nature erase or integrate the traces of human civilization – our achievements and wrongdoings? These questions motivate my explorations of constructing future worlds in the post-Anthropocene epoch, long after the end of human existence.

Student Name: charlotte coulstring
Grade: Grade 10
Artist Statement: I went on a field trip with my class to a local conservation area and did a sketch of some trees in my journal. I later decided to turn it into a dry point etching in class. Blind Faith
Blind Faith
Arthur B. Mazmanian Memorial Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Groton-Dunstable Regional High School

Student Name: Ainsley Norris
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This piece was made to represent trust and ‘blind faith’ in others. I used reference pictures of myself to create a self portrait in the bottom right and to create a human form on the left representing no one in particular, leaving it up to interpretation and to show how I blindly trust many people. Black, white, and grey were used to emphasize values and give the image a statue-like appearance.

MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Falmouth High School

Student Name: Jaylynn Fernandez
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: As I was looking for a challenge for my ceramic abilities, I knew this whimsical structure would be perfect for me. I wanted to add as much detail and texture to make it look not so ordinary. I didn't slab build just one house shape, I decided to slab build two, to make a shed type on the side. The iron oxide wash made this rustic piece show all the details and captured what I was looking for.

Saving the Rhinos
MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Dennis Yarmouth Regional High

Student Name: Hillary Joshy Dos Santos
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: This sculpture of a rhino projects the dignity and strength of the animal by focusing on a close view of its face. As such a big and tough animal people disregard that they are still a living mammal, who feel the pain they get through human harm. We need to find a way to protect them from the dangers of poaching and with incorporating words I hope to bring awareness to these amazing creatures.

MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Acton-Boxborough Regional High School

Student Name: Kal Sundberg
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: I’m interested in capturing scenes from a more casual point of view. In this piece in particular, I wanted to depict two characters going about their morning routine. My hopes were to capture the intimacy of the exchange through a strong focus on the colors of the scene and a vertical composition, enclosing the space and making it more comfortable to invoke a feeling of safety and security.

Up in the Clouds
Up in the Clouds
MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Wayland High School

Student Name: Sophia Haddad
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: In making this piece, I was inspired by both the curiosity of childhood imagination and my aspirations as a child to play in the clouds. I’d look out the window on airplanes and imagine myself jumping between the clouds (unbeknownst to the fact that if I tried, I’d fall right through). I chose to use a linocut reduction print to capture the playfulness of childhood and the power of imagination.
