Organization or School Affiliation: Waltham Public Schools

Student Name: Avery Bross

Artist Statement: Humans are prone to choose things based on the way they look. I was inspired by my time working in a garden over the summer to make this piece. To me the raspberries symbolize how much we value attractiveness over anything else.

Organization or School Affiliation: Billerica Memorial High School

Student Name: Alexander Leonard
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This piece is a self-portrait that I did in class with the idea of it being monochromatic with a different color for the background. My portrait itself had a lot of orange in it, so I chose to use blue for the background, since it's the complimentary color to it.

Student Name: Kate Gregorowicz
Grade: Grade 10
Artist Statement: This project was a monochrome self portrait assignment, but eventually my color choice started to mean something to me. Student Name: Alexis Govertsen
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This is a visual representation of imagination. Vivid colors, dragon heads, and lively flora all tucked in a small space behind lock and key so that no one can touch it. Just like this enchanted garden, in life we learn to protect our fantasies and wildest dreams behind a fence so that others may look, but not touch.

Eighth Night of Hanukkah

Organization or School Affiliation: Acton-Boxborough Regional High School

Student Name: Calista Barnett
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: I am Jewish, but, throughout my life, Judaism has been more about culture than religion. I used thin washes of acrylic paint to build up a soft glow from the candles to convey the feeling of love that is present in my family throughout the celebration of Hanukkah. I also used paper collage for the menorah to make it stand out, highlighting the importance of Hanukkah to me.

Organization or School Affiliation: Athol High School

Student Name: Corina Thibault
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: I painted this skeleton to show how people can go through a deep mental state in their life. The fire and smoke represents a dark state with negativity going around the head and body. I worked with acrylics and charcoal to achieve a gloomy feeling focusing on a grayscale. I felt vexed working on this piece, my mind corrupted with thoughts on family matters and things I tend to overthink.

Organization or School Affiliation: Athol High School

Student Name: Jackson Melo
Grade: Grade 9
Artist Statement: This landscape from imagination was created with a variety of both traditional and experimental media that literally breaks the surface of the picture plane. Meditating on a landscape, I applied paint, then squeezed water from a sponge directly over until it could no longer hold and broke the surface. It was as if my visceral response to all the flooding in my area and the damage to come.

Student Name: Solana Varela
Grade: Grade 10
Artist Statement: This piece challenged the creative side of my brain to come up with something I had never thought of before. Mrs. Hom-Mandell challenged us, giving us no boundaries or format to go off of. I think this was one of the most entertaining paintings I have created leaving me not wanting to finish it. The only guideline given was “surrealism” and this is my take on my dreams.

Student Name: ALLISON MACCALOUS
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: At age 9 I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. In this work, I’m exploring the connection between nature, technology, and medicine. Here, I created my insulin pump (the Omnipod) in Raku clay, which has three layers, a top layer, an inner mechanical layer, and bottom layer. I added wire to highlight the mechanical qualities of the pump and Raku glazes to create crackle and metallic surfaces.

Artist Statement: My work is a shoe portrait made using acrylic paint on canvas. My reference was a picture of me and my friends, taken over the summer on a ferry ride. The boat's movement made the picture blurry, so I aimed to convey that in the painting through the use of looser brushstrokes and blending in order to create a blurred effect. I also chose to contrast the different types of shoes in order to create
